In high school, I kept ALL of my band/record label/etc. stickers in a shoe box and posters on my walls. This is my old ceiling.

We chose to cover “Madam Me” for the Alkaline Trio tribute CD. “Madam Me” is the first song on the Alkaline Trio album that we were all the most familiar with, Maybe I’ll Catch Fire. Back when we first started touring, that CD often founds its way into our portable CD player that we had plugged into the cassette player in our conversion van. I liked how angry it was, because I’m pretty sure I was very angry back then. I also liked the way that the bass sounded.
One thing that I think is impressive about the song “Madam Me” is that he manages to say “piss” and “shit” in it, and despite that, it’s still a great song. I always think it’s impressive when someone can say words with such negative/kinda gross connotations and have them still sound poetic and cool. Harry Nilsson pulls this off very awesomely by slipping the word “crap” into “The Moonbeam Song”. It was also fun to put our own spin on “Madam Me”. Obviously, Alkaline Trio is a three-piece band. Since we have one more PIECE than them, we took advantage of that and added in some cool guitar work. We put lots of our own spins on this song. If Alkaline Trio hears it, I hope they don’t mind. Oh, and also, hey Alkaline Trio, we played with you guys like 13 years ago at Millvale Industrial Theater in Pittsburgh…remember that?

Listen to The Promise Hero’s version of “Sorry About That” from A Tribute To Alkaline Trio and read the band’s track explanation below! Pre-order the two-disc, 39-track, album in our online store and get it by the August 30th release date.
Alkaline Trio is one of those bands that just never seem to get old…literally and figuratively. For fans, they have staked a permanent place on every iPod and it will never be unreasonable to jam out to anything from Goddamnit to From Here to Infirmary to Agony & Irony. They have somehow managed the best of both worlds, maintaining the respect of their peers and early fans while achieving a good deal of mainstream success. With that said, we were excited when offered the opportunity to cover an Alkaline Trio song for a much-needed tribute album.
We chose “Sorry About That” off of Goddamnit, mostly because we felt it would be a good fit given our limited resources at the time (an acoustic guitar and some percussion). We didn’t want to make a reproduction of the album version but rather a fresh and unique spin on the song that would showcase Matt Skiba’s songwriting as well as our own sound. We got together one evening without much discussion on what we wanted to do or how we wanted to approach it and continued to work* through the night for 12 hours straight, resulting in the finished recording that is on the album. It was fun to see the song go through so many transformations all at once before settling in to its current state, and we hope that it is just as much fun to listen to! Please take the time to check out all of the great bands on A Tribute to Alkaline Trio, not to mention the discography of the 15-year vets themselves.
*by work I mean sit around, drink coffee, talk about string theory and occasionally pick up a guitar
